On Location, June 18

In Advance
Acrylic on gessoed, cradled birch panel 11 x 14 x 1 inches, wired at back and ready to hang. Painted on location from the front seat of my car.............afternoon, June 18, hot, humid, windy, the skies changing by the minute and the air feels unstable...something is coming......

Painting on Location....October 24

Secret Field, October 24 (Sold)
painted in the car because it was so windy and cold...

On location,  I set up the paints at the back, and bring them to the front, so that movement up front is very minimal. It's getting quite comfortable doing it this way.

Sling (Sold)
....calm, beautiful evenings.....big sky over harvested wheat. Acrylic collage painting on heavy archival paper 9.5 x 13 inches, image size 8.75 x 11 inches.

The method here is bit different from some of my others. I stand in front of the scene with full intention of making a picture of this specific view, and I commit a few things to memory....the few important things that I feel create the impact in the first place. THEN...no further reference is used to make the picture. The REASON for doing it this way is so that, in the process of painting, ONLY the paint, shape, colour, line, etc...are considered. The reference is internal, so the making of the painting is a bit more seamless. When I employ these different methods, the paintings work out somewhat differently in each case....

June End

June End (Sold)
...maturing wheatfields....evening, the last day of June. Acrylic on unprimed Whatman paper 10 x 13.75 inches, image size 9 x 12.5 inches.

Information from my wife, the plant expert. When you have a drought, plants will mature and produce seed earlier...it is their attempt to secure their survival by producing offspring. They are not healthy, but rather stunted,...but they have produced seed....so the next generation can have a go.....

Above Lost Dog Hill

Just thinking and remembering....not using any external reference at all. I hope this method will become a consistent category in my work. While I've used the method before, there don't seem to be very many of these.

...the last few days....

...a few pieces from the couple of days. I do try to make one piece per day, but there are a few days missed overall. But in the last year or so, I don't think I've missed very many. I think today's piece might end up being a fully abstract collage....I never really know until I sit down with the materials.
Top piece is (Sold)

Evening Walkout

In case anyone is wondering why sometimes these works start looking partly abstract, or even fully abstract without representatioal format evident....here's a brief explanation: Sometimes I'm perfectly happy being primarily an 'eye'. There is plenty of mystery in what is seen. But sometimes I'm walking, and thinking, and looking, and responding emotionally to what I'm seeing and also what I'm thinking about...the whole world gets mixed into an experience that is not only about the eye. Sometimes I'm addressing some of that internal 'mixing'.

While the whole business of making a picture rests upon formal means, the picture is never a type of pure abstraction. The picture is always about something in my world.

March Ice Storm

March Ice Storm  (Sold)
Freezing rain continued for a number of hours again during the night, and temperatures remain at around 0. Everything is covered in shiny ice. It will be hard to walk when I venture out for my hike today. Acrylic and pencil on unprimed Whatman paper 10 x 13.75 inches, image size 8.5 x 12 inches.

I ended up using strap-on ice cleats that fit onto the bottom of my boots....so it was a no-slip situation. Just like the old-time farmers who used to put chains on their tires when they needed to travel in mud, ice, or snow.

I'll list a companion piece to this tomorrow. The ice stayed for about a day, and disappeared in a matter of hours today as temperatures rose. At this time of year things can change dramatically and quickly.

Quick Thaw

the same location....just a few days apart

(lower piece Sold)
Every year I love to look at the snow patterns as the thaw happens. This year all the snow disappeared very quickly, leaving hardly any time to get any paintings done. There's still time for another winter blast or two. The top piece is on panel, and the bottom piece is on unprimed Whatman paper.

Late February

'After the Ice Storm' and 'Blue Way', both on birch panel. The glitter stuck around for a few days after the ice storm, and it was nice to see it all in midday sunlight.
