Country Living

 

I love walking these roads in the evenings.The roadsides are well treed...I hear the wind move through the foliage and all kinds of little animal life in the hedges. The crows are always squacking about something or other. The light seems to change by the minute, and there are open views as well as more crowded-in areas where there's less breeze....you can smell the summer growth. And I love being away from everything, and still hearing human life on the edge. I'm far up in the hills, and I can hear single cars winding down the road miles away. It makes me happy knowing they're there. I can hear cars coming from either direction for 15 seconds before I see them...tractors, ATVs and motorbikes I can hear for way longer before they pass. Often, on weekends, I can hear the rock band practicing, next to the horse farm and chickabiddy's....it's nice hearing them from this distance, but I wonder what Boris the horse farmer thinks...they are right across the road from him. I like stopping and talking to Sally the pretty young mare with the star on her forehead...she likes me and always looks up and approaches the fence when I get close....her horse buddies follow her. I keep meaning to bring them cut up apple bits. Recently I've seen a pair of coyotes ranging in the fields, close to the hedgerows, crossing at 10....they like being out the same time I am....getting close to dark...but not quite....

August Beach

Birdsall Beach on Rice Lake......a beautiful August day. Something that takes no effort, or little effort, will often appear very fresh and lovely in a painting. Collage will do that...the effort was made previously, and it was an easy, joyous effort at that. Lack of ease can be discouraging, disheartening.....so what gives the impression of ease in a painting? Lots of things will do it....and lots of things will prevent it. To some degree, these works are about this issue. How to keep the image fresh, alive, surprising, mysterious....in every stroke.

Acrylic collage paintings on single ply archival matte, 7.75 x 9.75 inches, signed lightly in pencil....the hot, final days of July, clouds flying by and coming together in all kinds of formations....

 

The paintings are often a combination of what is known/sensed/understood...and what is seen. While I love a lot of plein air painting, and I do make work based directly on observation....for me it is seldom a problem of simply recording what is seen. I know that if the work is more of an inevitablity than a surprise, I am less likely to make things....therefore the problem is always how to find surprise.

Saturday Morning Path

Acrylic collage painting on single ply archival matte board 7.75 x 9.75 inches......sometimes it's as if certain trees want their portrait painted.

I remember looking at a Cezanne painting in the Art Gallery of Ontario...not necessarily the strongest Cezanne...but there was one long stroke in there made with a skinny brush.....a tree branch that angled up and to the left...such a wonderful stroke...

Rolling In (SOLD)

2 b, 4b, 7b pencils....an interesting process for my AP students to try. Keep the pencil moving, hatch, scribble, line, hold the pencil by the tip, look for line variety, layer and over layer in varying directions, create connection between parts, balance black/white/grey, use the eraser as a technique......

June End, Evening at Garden Hill

Diagramed last night....a very hot and hazy evening, and painted today. I stopped to make this drawing but I was on my way to Richardson's Lookout...high ground which is very close by...you can see for miles in 3 directions. This painting is 8 x 8 inches, acrylic and pencil on matte board gessoed both sides.
