...a cold, crisp day, now with good snow coverage. Looking north, the sky still has bits of blue, but already, near 4:00 pm, the southern and eastern sky has dramatic yellow and rose. Someone has a smokey bonfire going by the little red shed. Acrylic and pencil on unprimed archival paper, 6.75 x 8.25 inches.

Snow Day, December 29
click here to view or buy new Stooshinoff works.
....December 29...a light but steady snow fell all day. I had only about 10 seconds to try and diagram the motif before my ballpoint either froze or quit working on paper made wet by the snow.
This is a collage painting....large glued shapes from acrylic painted papers in the first stages, with acrylic in-painting and some pencil work overtop. The mood established seems pretty close to what the day felt like.

Unless the snow is overly deep, it's better to walk off the roadside. Within the fields the views open up. Over the next hill you can see for miles....the low side of the field here, next to the hedgerow. Acrylic and pencil on archival unprimed Whatman paper, 10 x 7 inches.

Stolen Hour, Near Port Hope

Acrylic and pencil on archival paper, 11 x 15 inches. A lovely, calm early December afternoon. I'm not sure what makes for a motif that impresses me, but I've painted this gentle hill a bit north of Port Hope several times.

Pictures Away
Thank you to Matt Hyatt for sending me a very thoughtful note and this photo of my painting on his kitchen wall. It gives me great pleasure to see where my paintings end up. He looks great there, and very much at home!

......deep into November, it turns very cold, but here the blue sky over Lost Dog Hill promised a day full of hope. This is a collage painting. Though I make fewer of them than paintings, I always look forward to these sessions. They take a bit longer, and there are often strange little side avenues....the suprises are essential....I end up doing things I might not anticipate.

Home Grove
A portion of my home road as I walk back each day...a wonderful canopied lane, especially appealing in last light of evening, when the bats fly through. That picture still to paint...this one is from middle afternoon.

November Light

November can sometimes seem forbidding, but when I get out and walk in it...get warmed up and comfortable outside, it has its merits. Acrylic on unprimed archival paper, 6.5 x 8.25 inches.
Originating from Saskatchewan...the coming of winter used to terrify me. One of my early memories is waiting for the schoolbus in the morning, in 30 below temperatures. But I've made friends with winter here,....I sit in the snow under trees in my arctic parka, I park on deserted country roads and drink a cup of coffee with the windows open while I make a diagram.
