A view of County Rd 10 going north....just as the road turns to encircle a hill. I wanted to simplify more than usual here. There was a lot of drawing with blacks that I like to mix.....dark green, blues, with dark red browns mixed together.

West Field

I used to walk these fields at will....they were owned by someone far away who left the land fallow. The land was recently purchased and will be built upon, but this section will be a horse field.

Peterborough Sky

The day after a rain...much needed water for trees and crops, and very pleasant relief overall. Outside Peterborough, Ontario. Skies remain a large mystery.....I could paint them for years and not be done.

Strange Sky
Want a Stooshinoff....Get a Stooshinoff!....click here.
We waited patiently for rain and thought we would get some a few nights ago, but heavy clouds moved swiftly through, with corresponding dry lightning bursts. Everything moved through so quickly and there was no rain. The formations were very odd afterwards....strange vertical clouds and little puffy clouds. Luckily, we had about 1/2 inch of heavy rain yesterday!

Rain Wait in July
New Stooshinoffs...please click here
Entering the latter part of July and the bean plants are not forming pods....although everything looks pleasant and summery, there is a serious lack of rain affecting both crops and trees.

Little Green
Want a Stooshinoff? Get a Stooshinoff....click here.
In this July heatwave, I sat down in a bit of shade on the edge of a graveled path, and looked at the little stray plants coming through crushed stone. The acrylic was used in a very washy manner.
5.25 x 7.5 on unprimed Arches.

Cloud in Heat Wave
Want a Stooshinoff?...Get a Stooshinoff...click here.
It was barely tolerable in the heat yesterday and that continues today. I had to stay in the shade to diagram for this painting, even though it takes only minutes at most. I love these giant summer clouds that rise over tree lines. You can see what the scale of the picture is like.

Wishing

A small thing.....5 x 7.5 inches. Habit can be a real killer....it is often the enemy. We get tired of doing the same thing. I often look for ways to change something up. In this case, the diagram was even briefer than usual.....anything that makes an impression is worth making note of, but in this case there was the briefest of scribbles. The painting was made in a very washy way, working into the acrylic while it was still very wet. I enjoyed drawing with a small long brush and also with the pencil. It doesn't take much to make some change.....but it's important to keep doing it almost continually.

Twilight; Bat Watch
Click here to bid on my paintings!
We were watching the bats swoop in over the pond surface at twilight to collect insects. They like to come just as darkness falls. Unfortunately, there don't seem to be as many bats any more....I see some, but not as many as I used to. I was studying the tree line lines as we were waiting......a still, July night.

Heat Wave, July

I spent the day searching for shade. There was a bit here, provided by canopy from the country laneway. These days of extreme heat and no rain always feel dangerous, but I like to be out in them.

Thank you, Catherine Kehoe!
Catherine Kehoe sent along these wonderful photos of recent work she purchased from me. I absolutely love how she presented the pieces and how great they look in her beautiful home!
Catherine is an outstanding artist and teacher. I am constantly looking through her various online material as inspiration for myself and my students.

I drove down a very quiet stretch of road and was attracted by this little bluff bordering the mature wheatfield in early July. On unprimed Stonehenge, stained pink first. 7.5 x 9.75 inches.

Evening Formation

I often walk on the highway as well as the sideroads....you get a more open view of the sky. There is a small series of sky paintings; this strange vertical formation caught my attention....the sky was very still just before darkness started to fall.

Before the Rain
Harry Stooshinoff @ Daily Paintworks
This image added to Daily Paintworks today. I simplified the sky a great deal, invented things that aren't there, but it's all to somehow get closer to the initial impression made by the motif.

Daily Paintworks!
The work above is included. Although the sky looks overcast, very little rain fell....it was only the gentlest of showers, unfortunately, because we really need the rain. After 3/4 hours of walking my shirt was only damp.

Some recent painting, all acrylic on unprimed Arches The early part of summer is always the most glorious. I have been able to stick to a good rate of one painting per day. That will fall off as summer moves on and other things require attention.
