First Hill, Near Lake Ontario

click here to view or buy new Stooshinoff works.

A few minutes of concentrated drawing engrains the memory, likely forever. I still remember fragments, smells, the quality of the air, surrounding sounds, when I look at drawings and paintings I made on location years ago. In this case, I parked in a little path leading to this field. A little thicket was to my left, with insects buzzing in it, the leaves already bright with autumn......the sunshine was warm on a peaceful mid afternoon in late September.

Acrylic on archival print paper, 11 x 15 inches.

Power Line Road #2

The second of two paintings make from my hike on Power Line Road. Shown here is the access from the county road. Then you wander over high ridges, bush, fields....all on a narrow path next to the power lines. Acrylic on unprimed Arches, 6.75 x 9.75 inches.

Forest Way

...a bright Saturday afternoon in late September. Collage in the first stages, followed by brushework. 6.5 x  8.75 inches. I wish I would do more collages. I'm making painted papers at a much quicker rate than I use them.

Rain Promise Kept

click here to view or buy new Stooshinoff works.

After weeks of drought it was pure pleasure to have a full day of steady rain! I noted just a few colours and shapes from the motif and left almost everything else out.

Hillside Field, Late August

click here to view or buy new Stooshinoff works

A hillside field at the intersection of County Rd 28 and a county line. The field is always planted in this manner either to increase yield or to prevent erosion. It creates visual interest and I've painted it a few times. A fresh and beautiful Saturday morning....the last few days of holidays.

2 More Watercolor Monotypes

click here to view or buy new Stooshinoff works.

The treatment in the cloudscape is more transparent...paint the plate with one layer of reasonably thick watercolor, scratch through in places. The second image has more layers....let watercolor dry on the plate, overpaint, let dry, and print.

Sand Patches

click here to view or bid on new Stooshinoff works.

I always want a painting I haven't quite seen before, both in motif and method. In this case, the steep hillside and unexpected patches of sand created an unusual design.

Acrylic on Arches 6.75 x 9.75 inches.

Evening Green

click here to buy or view new Stooshinoff works.

A soy bean field in late August...fairly late in the evening. A few big pieces of collage went down first and then a fair bit of acrylic paintwork. Something about the handling of these last 2 collages seems different from my earlier ones.....perhaps more improvisation with the paint....

6.75 x 9.75 on heavy Arches paper.

Saturday Morning, Rice Lake

click here to buy or view new Stooshinoff works.

On a beautiful Saturday morning I parked on a steep hill in Bewdley and looked down on the Rice Lake view to diagram this. The residents of a nearby house eyed me suspiciously, finding my behaviour unusual.

Toward the Forest

click here to view or buy new Stooshinoff works.

Because a certain inevitabitity creeps into process (this follows this, follows this), I try to vary methods often. Yesterday I was on sunlit paths into the forest, places where I haven't spent much time this summer. The hilly paths were bright and inviting. I diagramed in my usual way, but used collage to put myself on new ground again.

August 15, 2012

The greatest freedom is just stopping and looking at a motif.....perfect silence, watching an effect move slowly through nature. It was very dry and the grey sky was very welcoming on this day.

August Haze

Acrylic on unprimed Arches, 7.5 x 9.25. I was driving down a country road I hadn't tried yet and was impressed by this very steep hill rising into a hazy August sky.
