Pasture, January 26
Pasture, January 26. (Sold) This is the 5th piece completed on these cradled panels. I often can't resist this view. I don't pass this way very often any more, but the road is on high ground, so the vista opens up so nicely. Those bushes are always strangely inviting.

Sundown, Jane's Forest (Sold)
In some of these, I know beforehand that the process will be more complex, or relatively simple. Both are fine, but it is important for me to mix the processes up, to keep things unpredictable and surprising.

First Snow, Garden Hill
First Snow, Garden Hill
...a fresh, brilliant day....snow fell during the night. Acrylic collage painting on thin birch panel, 8.5 x 12 inches. This blue had a special quality to it, and again, I was pleased that I didn't mess with it too much in the painting stage. Collaging white paper on top of another glued colour is always beautiful to me also (I often use that for snow...and I love how the white paper gets all accidentally but subtly marked up), but in this case I did paint over much of the white collage paper. I generally do enjoy painting winter a great deal...the structure of the land is more apparent....things are more spare....Friday, November 20, 2015
November Pasture (Sold)
A severe cut in the sky...rain ahead...pasture lands next to the forest. Acrylic collage painting on gessoed, thin birch panel 9 x 12 inches.
Because habituation takes place in all things, diminishing the intensity of experience, I search constantly for ways to keep the process fresh. These new panel paintings were one such thing. Now that I have made perhaps 5-6 of them in a row, the process has to be mixed again. After this work came a collage painting on paper. The expectations I put on myself are different with each of these little shifts in method. This is all very important because it keeps me wanting to make work each day....

Saturday Morning Route

Nightfall, October (SOLD)
A bittersweet time....the dark days come. I often get home so late that I'm walking in the dark or near dark. A favourite location.....the distant view at dusk reveals lights off in the distance, suggested here by the 2 specks of white. I like coming to the collages every so often. They provide a break in the type of thinking involved in the paintings....

Whisper Road (SOLD)
If you go for an hour walk and look around you will see hundreds of things of note. So many that it doesn't even seem possible to comment on them all or reference them in paintings. You look at something, and the image combines with another thought or sentiment running through your head, and the whole mood and meaning of what you are seeing changes. You look at the sky and note a motif....walk 10 paces forward, look again in a slightly different direction and something equally interesting presents itself,...and so it seems that very few things are actually noticed, and very few things are actually painted. There are a million more things to be done with landscape in painting.

Kestrel Place

....on my usual walk to this field with a distant view....some new companions. 2 kestrels sound their territorial alarm when I come within a short distance of this place. They have been dive bombing me regularly, sometimes coming quite close....I can hear the air of their wings as they pull out of the dive at the last second. Acrylic and pencil on matte board gessoed both sides, 8 x 8 inches.
