Yesterday while it was super hot, I wandered around in the the back acres. It's very dry again and everything was crunching underfoot. Some lovely clouds floating by....but nothing suggesting rain.....I dramatized what I saw here.

A view of County Rd 10 going north....just as the road turns to encircle a hill. I wanted to simplify more than usual here. There was a lot of drawing with blacks that I like to mix.....dark green, blues, with dark red browns mixed together.

Orchard Asleep, Mid April.

Acrylic and pencil on unprimed printing paper, 11 x 15 inches. An orchard high atop a hill on highway 2, close to Port Hope. Lush greens of spring on the ground but no new growth on the apple trees yet. They were a more purpley grey than this, but I left the darker contrast.

Rain on Home Field

It started raining as I returned home....stopped at the top of lost dog hill to make a little diagram for this and was able to make a few pen lines only, as they were washing away in the rain...but it was enough. This was the first of two paintings made today.

Little Forest

A cold day, late afternoon......the little forest at the back seems to be surviving.....the die-off resulting from a dry spring planting was not very severe. These little trees are into their third year now.

Things have been very busy in general and I look forward to getting back to more painting very soon.

Lost Dog Hill, January

I've painted this hill so many times, under many conditions. There seems something noteworthy about the little evergreen clinging so visibly to the slope....all alone. Lost Dog Hill on January 9th, 2:50 p.m. 7.25" x 6.5", acrylic on gessoed heavy paper, listed on Etsy.

A quiet, snowbound time. I like how the work changes almost without my intention.....seems to have something to do with these being a form of daily ritual. If the work goes this way or that, it's really not such a large issue....much more important that the work simply gets done and there remains a document of the time here, and what I noticed.

I see my favourite savage brush is getting rather decrepit looking....it's a stiff brush that I like to torture the paint with...suitable for certain large areas like the sky.

Pasture Hill

I walk by this pasture hill almost immediately after leaving my place. Often cows will graze right on to the top of the clearing. It's a mysterious place. The forest comes in thick very quickly, and gives the impression of proceeding on for miles. There is a path that cuts through, but the forest is also quite wild....lots of coyote chorus from this area at night.

A little 15 second sketch done on the paper that I always keep in my breast pocket for just such things....you never know when you will see something that asks to be painted. The pen sketch was done after coming home from work, about an hour before the early darkness falls, and there wasn't time to do the painting until next day after I finished teaching classes. I was working on the piece in the studio while an AP drawing student was completing works for the design piece outlined a few posts back.

Wheat, Harvest Ready

The same field from the painting shown yesterday...and this from a few days ago when the wheat was harvest ready. It's since been cut and this field looks vastly different again.

July Blue

Fast clouds moving in over the tree tops...painted on July 9th, acrylic on gessoed masonite panel, 8" x 10", listed on Etsy.

Avenue

...a largely abandoned, previously government run, tree growing facility....now only one building on this large tract of land is used as an auction building....the rest is going derelict.....a very ill-considered government cutback. Waiting for an auction on an early Sunday morning......the play of light very pronounced through this avenue of trees.

The End

A spot I drive by every day....this road just ends at the base of the big hill. I very much like that my area remains farmland with not too many encroachments in the name of development. This can still be the land of the odd.

Out Like a Lamb

Completed on March 31st. Almost all the snow is gone now, except in the forest. It's possible to get off the roads and into the fields. Here a patch of young tree growth caught my attention along a sharp hill incline. This is a 4" x 4" collage painting.....4 paintings were made in this session.

Wee Forest

I never know where these images are going to come from, but most come from looking into the landscape. Yesterday was a warm but overcast day. I walked deep into the forest...about an hour trek. It started raining about half way in...a very gentle, pleasant thing that didn't interfere at all. Returning home I stopped by the new forest before going in....the little bits of green are young evergreens peeking through....at this stage you can't see them well in summer because they are so small. This planting is only about a year old...there's been a good amount of die-off due to drought, but this plot should survive and fill in nicely.

I liked the relationship of the yellow to the white, to the grey of the sky. It was important to have the little trees just hint....and I knew that they should be done close to the end.

The 1 minute reference drawing was done in the rain....bits of smeared ink...

Heap, Oshawa Harbour

Another older work that I brought up to look at again.....there were a number of paintings that dealt with sections of Oshawa Harbour. Acrylic on canvas, 20" x 24".

Seedlings

All I ever need to know is the next step...well, sometimes maybe 3-4 steps ahead. I wasn't very happy with setting the first shapes so large, but the interest in the colour relationships took over. I knew suggesting the tender littleness of the seedlings would be a nice surprise kept for the very end. The pleasure in finding surprising but suitable colours keeps the building of the piece going. I liked finding the light splotch colours for the front of of the carton...and the yellow on the side was also cool to find. The background was supposed to be much simpler in the early stages...gradually it got much more complex than this...but I simplified it.

I'm glad the picture got made....something to record this delicate little growth. Every day I see things that should be made into pictures...I make a note, and quite often never get back to them.
