Self with Glasses

In a work session it helps to just keep going. The mirror is set up in front of me so I can turn to that as other plates were drying. This method is so responsive because it's very much like drawing. First the plate was completely covered, then wiped to expose the head shape, then worked back in to. If I got too picky or precious (which I did once or twice), I would just wipe the whole passage out and draw back in......no long pauses for too much thought or fuss, but there was time for some self evaluation.

Sand Patches

I always want a painting I haven't quite seen before, both in motif and method. In this case, the steep hillside and unexpected patches of sand created an unusual design.
Acrylic on Arches 6.75 x 9.75 inches.

August Green, Watercolour Monotype
click here to view or purchase new Stooshinoff works.
I'm looking forward to using more of this very seductive process this year. For someone like me, who works quickly, it pays to have a number of plates on the go at the same time, because you have to wait for the watercolour to dry completely before you add another layer, or before you print. This is the first print produced, from a single plate image.
2 plates were used for this one, and I think I may have worked back into it with watercolour. The techniques become seamless and after a while, it's even hard to tell what was printed, and what was added by brush later.

Evening Green

A soy bean field in late August...fairly late in the evening. A few big pieces of collage went down first and then a fair bit of acrylic paintwork. Something about the handling of these last 2 collages seems different from my earlier ones.....perhaps more improvisation with the paint....

Haliburton Sky, Early August

It will often happen that I want to put the least amount possible into a picture...just enough to hint at some sensation that I want to make reference to. Collage is one of the methods that's very useful for this. In this case I painted first, then collaged, then painted a bit more.
There is also a long standing attraction to black...mixed blacks made from colour. I remember a colour similar to this that I used years ago in a number of paintings made at the Emma Lake Workshop in northern Saskatchewan. Recently I've been thinking of those blacks quite often...who knows why.

Saturday Morning, Rice Lake

On a beautiful Saturday morning I parked on a steep hill in Bewdley and looked down on the Rice Lake view to diagram this. The residents of a nearby house eyed me suspiciously, finding my behaviour unusual.

Toward the Forest

Because a certain inevitabitity creeps into process (this follows this, follows this), I try to vary methods often. Yesterday I was on sunlit paths into the forest, places where I haven't spent much time this summer. The hilly paths were bright and inviting. I diagramed in my usual way, but used collage to put myself on new ground again.

The greatest freedom is just stopping and looking at a motif.....perfect silence, watching an effect move slowly through nature. It was very dry and the grey sky was very welcoming on this day.

The lake at Haliburton. Last Sunday it rained for most of the day, clearing in the evening. I painted this in my cabin as soon as I arrived.

Mono Mania
click here to view or purchase new Stooshinoff work.
I produced many monoprints, in a number of series. My faourites were a group of self portraits and a group of landscapes made from my customary quick diagrams. I kept over-running the road to the studio, ending up at the town dump, repeatedly. I love dumps so took the opportunity to diagram the scene above. It`s a 2 plate monotype. The self portrait is a one plate monotype but had watercolour painting over top.

Watercolor Monotypes

Both of these little monotypes are the first printings. In each case I printed the plates a few more times. In the past, I often went back into the plates to made additions between printings, but I didn't in this case. There are always a great many things to try with monoprinting. The workspace shot is my little table at Haliburton. I miss that lovely studio already.

Haliburton Monotypes
click here to view or purchase recent Stooshinoff work
I have long done monoprints or montypes but forgot how wonderful they are. The advantages are the ease and freedom of the processes, and the opportunity to exploit surprise. In a recent workshop attended at Haliburton School of the Arts, I used watercolour on sanded heavy duty plastic plates which were run through the press. Most images were double plate images, meaning that one plate was used to print a unifying undercolour before the top image plate was run through the press. Some of the prints I keep without any further additions, but many have more watercolour added once the paper is dry....this is an example of that.
I will post more monoprints from this workshop over the next week.
I also fell in love with the Haliburton School of the Arts studio building...it is a roomy, wonderful place to work!

Early August, Back Acres.

Yesterday while it was super hot, I wandered around in the the back acres. It's very dry again and everything was crunching underfoot. Some lovely clouds floating by....but nothing suggesting rain.....I dramatized what I saw here.
