...looking toward Wendy's Hill, the highest feature near me....late afternoon of the first day of the new year! The view is a bit elusive and takes some careful positioning....a few steps in either direction and the hill disappears. Acrylic on archival paper, 9.5 x 7.5 inches.

...a cold, crisp day, now with good snow coverage. Looking north, the sky still has bits of blue, but already, near 4:00 pm, the southern and eastern sky has dramatic yellow and rose. Someone has a smokey bonfire going by the little red shed.  Acrylic and pencil on unprimed archival paper, 6.75 x 8.25 inches.

Snow Day, December 29

....December 29...a light but steady snow fell all day. I had only about 10 seconds to try and diagram the motif before my ballpoint either froze or quit working on paper made wet by the snow.

This is a collage painting....large glued shapes from acrylic painted papers in the first stages, with acrylic in-painting and some pencil work overtop. The mood established seems pretty close to what the day felt like.

Unless the snow is overly deep, it's better to walk off the roadside. Within the fields the views open up. Over the next hill you can see for miles....the low side of the field here, next to the hedgerow. Acrylic and pencil on archival unprimed Whatman paper, 10 x 7 inches.

...an early December afternoon...it was a mercurial day ranging from full cloud coverage to very blue sky. Little bits of our new forest are seen at the very bottom. Drought has taken some trees but most will survive. 11 x 15 inches, acrylic and pencil on archival paper.

Garden Hill

This is a special hill that has been painted many times, in all seasons and all weather conditions. On the day this was made, I made a trip just to this site with the intent of painting this subject. That's not usual for me....usually I have no idea what will happen or what I'm looking for.

My preference is that the process maintain a very easy flow and a good sense of mystery. I don't really want to know too much about what will happen....when I DO end up knowing too much, making the painting can turn out oddly oppressive and less alive. I like pleasing surprises at every stage. Here, the last stroke to the painting was the horizontal bit of white on the top of a cloud mid right sky....it lent solidity to the whole painting.

At a certain point, the painting is about mechanics....how much of this to how much of that? It turns out I am really a painter of blobs....I like making a paint blob and moving it around....whatever else the painting is, it's a pleasing arrangement of blobs.

Pasture Hill

I walk by this pasture hill almost immediately after leaving my place. Often cows will graze right on to the top of the clearing. It's a mysterious place. The forest comes in thick very quickly, and gives the impression of proceeding on for miles. There is a path that cuts through, but the forest is also quite wild....lots of coyote chorus from this area at night.

A little 15 second sketch done on the paper that I always keep in my breast pocket for just such things....you never know when you will see something that asks to be painted. The pen sketch was done after coming home from work, about an hour before the early darkness falls, and there wasn't time to do the painting until next day after I finished teaching classes. I was working on the piece in the studio while an AP drawing student was completing works for the design piece outlined a few posts back.
