Painting Process Videos.....Coyote Hill, March End

The final video shows how I use my left over paints from each session to paint collage papers used in other work. You can see that even for a small painting like this, about 7-8  8.5 x 11 sheets are covered. I end up with a lot of collage papers!....likely more than I can ever use up.

The completed painting is also included here.

Painting Process Videos.....Coyote Hill, March End

Coyote Hill, March End

I've documented the making of this picture in video. I'll post the finished painting at the very end. There are a number of video sections, and I'll post them all here. They may be of interest to a few people who are curious about process. In this case I'm working from a photo on my computer screen. If I was working from one of my diagrams, it would be taped right above the painting as well. Although it takes a while, the process is really very decisive. There is no stopping and thinking....it is always go, go, go. The thinking is done in advance, and while the brush is moving.

There are about 4 or 5 videos....I'll post them all in sequence. This if the first one....

March Ice Storm

March Ice Storm  (Sold)
Freezing rain continued for a number of hours again during the night, and temperatures remain at around 0. Everything is covered in shiny ice. It will be hard to walk when I venture out for my hike today. Acrylic and pencil on unprimed Whatman paper 10 x 13.75 inches, image size 8.5 x 12 inches.

I ended up using strap-on ice cleats that fit onto the bottom of my boots....so it was a no-slip situation. Just like the old-time farmers who used to put chains on their tires when they needed to travel in mud, ice, or snow.

I'll list a companion piece to this tomorrow. The ice stayed for about a day, and disappeared in a matter of hours today as temperatures rose. At this time of year things can change dramatically and quickly.

March Ice Storm

This was all bare field yesterday, covered now with snow and ice on top. The first part of the storm is over, more to come this afternoon and tonight. No ice build up on trees yet, luckily, and power is on. I paint a lot of pictures in this area.

March Paintings......

The last 2 paintings....the top one is a companion to the previous sky piece. Also, I always like to get in a painting of the last snow patch before March is done.

March Sweep

March Sweep
....the sky night before last.....cool but very pleasant days. Acrylic collage painting on gessoed thin birch panel 7.5 x 12 inches. Sometimes the mood of  particular place and time seems to touch in the right way, creating a strong connection with the picture afterward.

Last Lost Picture

The last of the small pieces found in my storage area after 16 years. I like how obsessive I was about getting the small details on the shoreline....I'm sure my eyes were much better back then.

Quick Thaw

the same location....just a few days apart

(lower piece Sold)
Every year I love to look at the snow patterns as the thaw happens. This year all the snow disappeared very quickly, leaving hardly any time to get any paintings done. There's still time for another winter blast or two. The top piece is on panel, and the bottom piece is on unprimed Whatman paper.

Found Paintings

'To Lake Ontario' and 'July Blue'
I found 7 works from 16 years ago, in a box in my storage area. I always had trouble keeping track of inventory in galleries (one of the reasons I’m glad I no longer have to deal with them much). I was happy to see these pieces again. I’ll show them here and in my shop. Acrylic on thin gessoed plywood panel, 8 x 10 inches. These are the first 2..........beautiful summer days of years gone by......
