A painting is made every day, and they all relate back to this place. I have to keep the process as fresh as possible, so the processes are constantly mixed....a piece done on location, a collage with paint on top in studio, a piece from memory and/or imagination, a piece from on site diagrams. I go out every day; sometimes it's to find a location to paint...but sometimes it's just to go out.....the painting comes after...

....afternoon, at Rice Lake. Acrylic collage painting on heavy archival paper 11 x 15 inches, image size 9.5 x 12 inches.

...the process here was inversed a bit. Usually, when I use collage, I begin with collage, and then paint on top of the piece. Here, the piece was meant to be a pure painting, but I felt I needed more surprise in the sky, and I needed to do something else to get the character of the sky, so I decided to use collage half way through the painting, even while the sky was partially wet. I like it very much when a real element of surprise enters into the work process, and that happened here.

May Blue

 ...gorgeous days of early May....evening cloud dalliance over the winter wheat field. Acrylic collage painting on heavy archival paper 11 x 15 inches, image size 10 x 11 inches.

 

This work started with the top sheet of blue, which had a hole in it due to a tearing of the paper.....you can see that tear just to the left of the cloud at center....it was very important to have that tear there....it pleased me to no end.

April Morning

It's unusual for me to do morning pictures, but it was very pleasant being out on the roads at that hour. Rainy, overcast and cool....past greening pastures and into the forest, noisy with birdsong.  The video recording the last stage of this piece is in the link below. This piece is (Sold).

...A place I walk to every day, to sort through things, or just to say hello.

 

...if you know how to do it, you won't want to do it. This idea shows up almost every painting. This sky was repainted a few times, and you never know what you're going to get. You get so watchful to every little nuance, and somehow you find your way to a bit of fascination worth keeping. It's always a bit scary......

Painting Process Videos.....Coyote Hill, March End

The final video shows how I use my left over paints from each session to paint collage papers used in other work. You can see that even for a small painting like this, about 7-8  8.5 x 11 sheets are covered. I end up with a lot of collage papers!....likely more than I can ever use up.

Coyote Hill, March End

I've documented the making of this picture in video. I'll post the finished painting at the very end. There are a number of video sections, and I'll post them all here. They may be of interest to a few people who are curious about process. In this case I'm working from a photo on my computer screen. If I was working from one of my diagrams, it would be taped right above the painting as well. Although it takes a while, the process is really very decisive. There is no stopping and thinking....it is always go, go, go. The thinking is done in advance, and while the brush is moving.

There are about 4 or 5 videos....I'll post them all in sequence. This if the first one....

....almost dark upon my return. Acrylic collage painting on thin gessoed birch panel 7.5 x 12 inches.

I have a strange relationship with the collage stage of these works. I like to work quickly, and yet the collage process is rather slow and methodical. It allows me to deliberate in a way that I don't find annoying. It is akin to laying bricks, or building something out of wood....one piece gets added to another and you can see tangible progress. And this stage also feels very different than the laying on of paint that comes afterward. It's an odd combination that mystifies me a bit......

....it was snowing and the juncos hid in the bush after getting their food from the feeder. Acrylic collage painting on heavy archival paper 11 x 15 inches, image size 9.75 x 10.25 inches. The procedure on this one was to simply look out the window, note key compositional, colour, and thematic data, and go right into the work without sketches. Every so often I would get up from my work area, and carefully look at the motif.

I am almost out of Yes paste, which is a big deal because it is without a doubt the best glue I've found for making collage work. It's strong, cleans up easily, goes a long way, is archival, and works great with the papers and panels I'm using. I can't buy any in art stores near me, and had to order it online the last time I purchased. I can't do that at the moment and have to wait for winter to finish because the glue might freeze in transit....the company won't ship until spring.  I'll do my best until then!

....the last sliver of light as I head home. Acrylic collage painting on gessoed, thin birch panel 7.5 x 12 inches.

One of the reasons I like doing the collages so much is I never know what I'm going to get. I painted this sheet that ended up being used for the sky...... and had it sitting on a pile of paints to dry. I'd look over at it every so often, admiring it, wondering what I could use it for. I always like it when I notice a sheet after I cover it with paint....it's a sign it will be used for something later. Mind you, there are 1000s of painted sheets that might never get used sitting in my piles.......

Overcast, with a heavy sky, but still very pleasant for deep January. Acrylic collage painting on gessoed, cradled birch panel 8 x 10 inches. This is the 2nd painting made on these cradled panels. I'm enjoying them. I made a 3rd one today, and might do 3 or 4 more. I can never tell in advance what the surface will be for the next day. I do know that when I feel a certain resistance or reservation, usually having something to do with a process becoming habitual, I tend to pull back and switch the support and size for that day. But all things are returned to.

...the sky was wonderful. You get some chicken noodle casserole with this painting. Acrylic collage painting on thin, gessoed birch panel 7.5 x 12 inches.

I often like to do things with text, and signs of past history on the collage papers...in this case, it fits in quite nicely because there are little bits of darkness in that steep road ditch. There is an extremely bright ultramarine blue sheet beneath the white of the snow.....I layer these papers sometimes, to get the white on top to behave slightly differently. You can see hints of that blue in a place or two..... a form of underpainting. But for the collage, it only works if the over sheet has some degree of transparency.

For some reason, this one seems like a companion piece to the one from yesterday, even though they look very different.
