Country Living

 

I love walking these roads in the evenings.The roadsides are well treed...I hear the wind move through the foliage and all kinds of little animal life in the hedges. The crows are always squacking about something or other. The light seems to change by the minute, and there are open views as well as more crowded-in areas where there's less breeze....you can smell the summer growth. And I love being away from everything, and still hearing human life on the edge. I'm far up in the hills, and I can hear single cars winding down the road miles away. It makes me happy knowing they're there. I can hear cars coming from either direction for 15 seconds before I see them...tractors, ATVs and motorbikes I can hear for way longer before they pass. Often, on weekends, I can hear the rock band practicing, next to the horse farm and chickabiddy's....it's nice hearing them from this distance, but I wonder what Boris the horse farmer thinks...they are right across the road from him. I like stopping and talking to Sally the pretty young mare with the star on her forehead...she likes me and always looks up and approaches the fence when I get close....her horse buddies follow her. I keep meaning to bring them cut up apple bits. Recently I've seen a pair of coyotes ranging in the fields, close to the hedgerows, crossing at 10....they like being out the same time I am....getting close to dark...but not quite....

To Lake Ontario, On Location, June 25

To Lake Ontario

Painted from the front seat of may car.

 a very beautiful and gently unsettled evening....it started off almost perfectly clear, but within 20 minutes came a variety of quick showers. The sky was repainted right at the end. Acrylic, pencil, on thin gessoed panel 7.75 x 8 inches. I always like the idea that every single little touch is important...there is an energy to the quality of mark that often shouldn't be tampered with. I like that the lowest part of the grey cloud is the first big brushstroke that went in...and it wasn't touched afterward....

I like this spot...one day I walked right around the whole field. just north of Port Hope, Ontario...above the lake, the land is hilly and beautiful. Here, I'm about 2 minutes north of Garden Hill.

Spring Coming

 

From the last few days. Perhaps the last snow of the season has fallen...it is definitely getting warmer now. Sometimes I don't get out for the daily hike until after dark.  Both are acrylic collage paintings on gessoed, thin Masonite panel 8 x 8 inches.

Sundown, March 7

Acrylic on gessoed, thin Masonite panel, 8 x 8 inches. As I keep doing these, one per day, the format becomes more and more important. The size and surface that I'll work on, becomes a key component of the work session. It's the critical thing, and the first thing, that starts the energy flowing.

Smallest Works....

This whole series started with works this size years ago. I just finished one today that is 4 x 7 inches...some are a little bigger. All of the ones in this short current series will go into frames and be displayed at the Buckhorn Art Festival this August. But I list them on my websites before that...and many get sold in advance. Not a worry....I just make more pieces that will fit the frames. If you come to the Buckhorn art festival, I will have an assortment of framed and unframed pieces to choose from.

Old Prison Grounds

 

Old Prison Grounds, Millbrook, Ontario....on location...

...the prettiest 100 acres in Millbrook, Ontario. All evidence of the old maximum security prison has been removed...a good place to walk. Made on location from the front seat of my car. Acrylic on cradled birch panel 8 x 10 x 1 inches, wired at back and ready to hang. (Sold)

 ...still a few degrees above freezing...a quiet overcast day. People pull into this space at the entrance to the old prison grounds, and walk far up the hills with their dogs. The 'no trespassing' sign is still there, but the gate is open and many people walk these grounds...

 

Buckhorn Fine Art Festival

I will be taking part in the Buckhorn Fine Art Festival, in Buckhorn, Ontario, August 19th, and 20th of this year. I'll be showing a wide selection of my small works. Some will be framed, and many will also be unframed, in plastic sleeves, and can be looked through.

Years ago, this series of small landscapes began with the approximate size of the 2 pieces above...5.5 x 8 inches. These 2 are  new and were completed today and yesterday. I'm going to go back to this size for a little while....it feels like I'm making secret messages when I work this small....an interesting and enchanting feeling. I started making work this size while I was a teacher....I needed to  keep making work, but time was short, so I would make a piece this size when I got home from school in the evenings. I was always tired, but making one of these would rejuvenate me.

2 in 1 Sitting....

 

Although at first glance, there may be a lot of consistency from work to work, in order to keep the process always fresh and unexpected, I mess with procedure. Although they are all small, the slight variations in size are very important and have a huge influence on the work. I change the methodology and working procedures in various ways. Here, the size is a bit smaller than usual, and 2 are done in one sitting, one right after the other. Seen here are 2 consecutive days.....2 works from one day, 2 from the next.
