Spring Squares

Winter Paintings....

I am coming to the end of my stock of Whatman paper. It's wonderful to paint on.....it holds washes beautifully, and buckles hardly at all with any application of acrylics. These 3 December paintings were done one after the other, on consecutive days....(top and bottom piece Sold)

Acrylic on unprimed Arches paper 8.5 x 12 inches. It's always interesting to see which images end up being more popular than others. This one sold quickly and received many responses. I tend to like them all, as I make them, so can't really tell which ones will receive strong response.

August Haze

Every time I change the paper I use, the work changes slightly as well. I'm enjoying this Arches paper. Many of my paintings start with an undercoat wash, usually a light red. The image is then drawn and painted over that. This paper buckled a fair bit initially, sometimes making it distracting to produce the painting, and some of the buckle remained afterward. There is a simple and very effective fix for this, at least for work of this small scale. I let the work fully dry, place it upside down on a clean, flat surface, and spray the back gently with water and let the paper fully saturate. I brush the excess water with a larger house painting brush so that all parts of the paper have equal access to the water. I place this wet sheet in between sheets of Masonite, and many sheets of blotting paper. This is then all placed under a very tall stack of heavy art books. I remove the painting after a day or more, and the piece is perfectly flat. Sometimes a bit of buckle in the work is fine, and even preferable.

August 1, Sky Over Lost Dog Hill (Sold) ....despite beautiful evening skies, the extreme heat and drought continue. Acrylic on heavy, umprimed Somerset paper 11 x 15 inches, image size 9 x 13 inches.

A New Series of Ink Drawings

 

These India ink drawings are a bit of a new direction. I call them 'Chances' because they are almost completely unplanned. There is always a searching for something, but in these, the search takes only 5-10 minutes...then you search again. They are even more improvisational than my other things. The hand is continually moving, and I move quickly from one drawing to the other. They are produced on old pages from an old illustrated encyclopedic volume from the early 1800s....the paper has a great deal of rag content in it, and there are wonderful engraved illustrations on each page (the volume's binding was in poor condition, otherwise I would have sold it rather than taken it apart).

I want to make many of these, so I want them to be inexpensive. It's a bit like automatic writing......with certain design considerations imposing themselves seamlessly upon the task.......

The book page paper is 7.5 x 11 inches. The drawings are completed first, and then they are laminated to heavy archival paper, in this case 9.5 x 13 inches. Signed lightly in pencil lower right, H. Stooshinoff, 2016.

Just thinking and remembering....not using any external reference at all. I hope this method will become a consistent category in my work. While I've used the method before, there don't seem to be very many of these.

...I sometimes stop at the churchyard at the top of the hill. I can see for miles in a number of directions, and it's interesting to walk through the graveyard and read the aging headstones. I sit on the big boulder with an inscription that says there's a time capsule buried beneath...and drink my coffee. Heat Wave

Almost too hot to venture outside today....the first heat wave of 2014. Acrylic and pencil on matte board gessoed both sides, 8 x 8 inches. I'm quite happy to be preparing the surfaces this way. There is no warping of the surface over time...almost like painting on panel, but it's still paper.

I spent the day searching for shade. There was a bit here, provided by canopy from the country laneway. These days of extreme heat and no rain always feel dangerous, but I like to be out in them.

The perfect type of January day....very clear and still...not too cold, the sun warming everything at mid afternoon. I picked this motif for the convergence of shadows.
