Twilight; Bat Watch

We were watching the bats swoop in over the pond surface at twilight to collect insects. They like to come just as darkness falls. Unfortunately, there don't seem to be as many bats any more....I see some, but not as many as I used to.  I was studying the tree line lines as we were waiting......a still, July night.

Heat Wave, July

I spent the day searching for shade. There was a bit here, provided by canopy from the country laneway. These days of extreme heat and no rain always feel dangerous, but I like to be out in them.

I drove down a very quiet stretch of road and was attracted by this little bluff bordering the mature wheatfield in early July. On unprimed Stonehenge, stained pink first. 7.5 x 9.75 inches.

I often walk on the highway as well as the sideroads....you get a  more open view of the sky. There is a small series of sky paintings; this strange vertical formation caught my attention....the sky was very still just before darkness started to fall.

This image added to Daily Paintworks today. I simplified the sky a great deal, invented things that aren't there, but it's all to somehow get closer to the initial impression made by the motif.

The work above is included. Although the sky looks overcast, very little rain fell....it was only the gentlest of showers, unfortunately, because we really need the rain. After 3/4 hours of walking my shirt was only damp.

Some recent painting, all acrylic on unprimed Arches The early part of summer is always the most glorious. I have been able to stick to a good rate of one painting per day. That will fall off as summer moves on and other things require attention.

Start of June

There were a few weeks of little or no rain but we've had plenty the last few days. Bit of rain worry in these recent ones. The pink bean field was just starting and should do well now. I was looking down from a far distance onto the yellow field. With all the rain it will be very green in the next few days. There's a tiny house in the yellow field, at the tree line, center.

The entrance road which is often in shade.....when the summer heats up, it's very nice to have a shaded lane and large canopy on the county road. Acrylic collage on unprimed Arches, with acrylic brushwork in the final stages.

Rd 10 at Garden Hill

....down the hill, past the Garden Hill Garage and up the steep climb.....an intimate, peaceful spot I pass every day.

Development

Everyone seems to hate trees, because they rip more out of the ground than ever seems necessary.....one house going in on 113 acres, and all the little copses are being torn out....habitat for many birds and other creatures.

2 miles from home. Yesterday was a wonderful day....as was today.

Morning Hill

I stopped on the morning drive to work and diagramed this fresh May hill. This painting was made later that evening.

2 Encaustic Paintings, Lake Ontario, Late April

Encaustic is a wonderful medium, and especially suited to the scale of my work. It has been a while since I've made encaustic paintings....other methods require less preparation. Here, I used the same diagram to produce 2 works, one a bit bigger than the other, one on thin plywood panel, the other on paper laminated to panel.

Late April

2 very recent works, both diagramed during lunch hours a few miles outside of Port Hope.

Orchard Asleep, Mid April.

Acrylic and pencil on unprimed printing paper, 11 x 15 inches. An orchard high atop a hill on highway 2, close to Port Hope. Lush greens of spring on the ground but no new growth on the apple trees yet. They were a more purpley grey than this, but I left the darker contrast.

Sweep

11 x 15 inches, acrylic and pencil on heavy printing paper.

From one of my brief lunch hour drives into the countryside just outside Port Hope. Early afternoon around April 10th.......a fast moving cloud came sweeping through.

From the Home of Katherine Humphreys

Nothing gives me more pleasure than to see my work well presented in someone's home. It also brings the creative process full circle. On a winter day I stopped to diagram this scene at Rice Lake, painted the piece later that day, lived with it and studied it for a time....and now it's gone far away to live in the lovely home of Katherine Humphreys.

Village Dump Site

The white sand and variety in elevations always interests me when I pass this site....sometimes I stop. It's been defunct for a while and is properly covered over.

Some Spring Paintings

Recently the Millbrook, Ontario printmaker, George Raab gave my some various sizes of Arches paper that he couldn't use for his large prints, and I'm really enjoying painting on the unprimed surface; it's very intimate and responsive. In some cases a thin wash goes in as an undercoat, and sometimes a last stage of pencil work is used to help tie things together. The little paintings seem to be getting a bit bigger...yikes!....but still not bigger than 11 x 15 inches. Thank you, George!
